In the Beginning…
I’m not quite sure how I should start this whole blog thing. I guess the beginning is as good a place as any. During my senior year of college at Lipscomb University, I decided to spend a semester studying abroad in Vienna, Austria. Though I would love to tell you that I decided to do this so that I could learn, grow, and become more culturally aware, my original desire study abroad was because my two good friends were going and I didn’t want to feel left out. Regardless of the means, the experience changed my life and I developed a passion for travel and culture.A few years later, I met a girl who shared the same passions. I had a huge crush on her and was sad when she left Tennessee to backpack across Europe for a few months, though I did take the opportunity to give her a few pointers on places to see in Vienna. A few months after she returned, we began dating. One evening, I remember her telling me that if nothing was keeping her in Tennessee after one year, she was moving to Europe. I knew that I wanted to be the thing keeping her in Tennessee but also promised myself that I would do everything to make her (and my) dreams come true if we got married.
Well we did get married! On September 23, 2011, JoEllen and I began a very happy life together in Nashville. We had good jobs, great friends, and were close to family. One year later, I began working towards a doctoral degree in education and wrote a dissertation on the long term effects of studying abroad. Since this three-year program pushed back our timeline of living abroad, I knew we had no time to waste and began job hunting in December of 2014.
